A Patchwork Masterpiece from the Mountain Streams

The Calico Hillstream Loach (Sewellia sp. "Calico") is a rare and visually captivating variant of the beloved hillstream loach group, distinguished by its irregular calico-style patterning of cream, gold, and dark brown patches across its flattened body. Like its close relative the Tiger Hillstream Loach, it is built for life in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated hill streams — clinging to rocks and glass with ease while displaying its extraordinary markings. A premium collector's fish for the serious high-flow aquarium enthusiast.

Overview

Attribute Details
Common Name Calico Hillstream Loach
Scientific Name Sewellia sp. "Calico"
Origin Fast-flowing hill streams, Southeast Asia
Adult Size 6 – 7 cm (2.4 – 2.8 in)
Lifespan 5 – 8 years
Difficulty Intermediate
Temperament Peaceful; mildly territorial with own species

Appearance

The Calico Hillstream Loach features the same broad, flattened, ray-like body plan as other Sewellia species, with wide-spread pectoral and pelvic fins for anchoring in strong current. What sets it apart is its unique calico colouration — an irregular mosaic of cream, amber, gold, and dark brown patches that varies from fish to fish, making every specimen one of a kind. A truly striking and unusual addition to any high-flow setup.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20 – 24°C (68 – 75°F) — cooler water is essential
  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 5 – 12
  • Dissolved Oxygen: High — strong surface agitation required
  • Flow: Strong current is critical for long-term health

This species is highly sensitive to warm, stagnant, or low-oxygen conditions. A powerful filter or powerhead providing strong, consistent flow is essential. Not suitable for standard low-flow tropical community tanks.

Diet & Feeding

  • Primary: Biofilm, algae, and aufwuchs grazed from rocks and hardscape
  • Supplemental: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini, spinach, and sinking pellets
  • Treats: Frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp occasionally

Primarily a grazer — ensure sufficient biofilm and algae growth on rocks and surfaces. Supplement regularly with sinking foods to maintain condition.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

  • Peaceful with most fish that tolerate strong flow — white cloud mountain minnows, danios, hillstream gobies
  • Can be kept in small groups; males may display to each other but rarely cause injury
  • Avoid slow-water species, large cichlids, or aggressive bottom dwellers
  • An outstanding algae grazer and a conversation-starting centrepiece fish

Sold individually. Each fish has unique calico patterning. All livestock is inspected and conditioned before sale. Live arrival guaranteed under our livestock policy.
