Appearance — A Grade
Our A-grade Butterfly Koi are selected for exceptional quality — featuring vibrant, well-defined colour patterns, symmetrical markings, and the hallmark long, flowing fins that extend gracefully from the dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins. Colour varieties may include kohaku (red and white), sanke, showa, and other classic koi patterns. As they grow, their fins continue to lengthen, becoming increasingly spectacular with age.
Water Parameters & Setup
- Temperature: 59 – 77°F (15 – 25°C)
- pH: 7.0 – 8.5
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm (koi are sensitive to poor water quality)
- Pond Size: Minimum 1,000 gallons for a small group; larger is always better
- Filtration: Heavy-duty biological and mechanical filtration is essential
- Depth: Minimum 3 feet (90 cm) to protect from predators and temperature extremes
- Note: Butterfly Koi can also be kept in very large indoor aquariums (300+ gallons) as juveniles
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: High-quality koi pellets (wheat germ-based in cooler months, high-protein in warmer months)
- Treats: Watermelon, oranges, lettuce, peas, and earthworms
- Colour enhancers: Spirulina and carotenoid-rich foods help maintain vibrant colouration
- Important: Do not feed when water temperature drops below 10°C (50°F)
Compatibility
Butterfly Koi are peaceful and social. They do well with:
- Other koi varieties
- Large goldfish (Comets, Shubunkins)
- Pond-safe bottom feeders
Avoid housing with small fish that may be accidentally eaten, or aggressive species that may damage their flowing fins.
The Butterfly Japanese Koi (A Grade) is a long-term investment in living beauty — a fish that grows more magnificent with every passing year. With proper care, these stunning koi will be a centrepiece of your pond for decades to come.
