Appearance
Bucephalandra sp. Velvet is named for the rich, velvety quality of its dark green to near-black leaves, which display a stunning blue-purple iridescent sheen under aquarium lighting. The leaf surface has a smooth, almost lustrous quality that catches and reflects light beautifully. New leaves often emerge with a reddish or bronze tint before maturing to their characteristic dark, velvety colouration. The contrast between the dark leaves and the iridescent sheen makes this one of the most visually striking Bucephalandra varieties available.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 5.0 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 1 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: Low to moderate — the iridescent sheen is most pronounced under moderate, directional lighting
- CO₂: Not required, but benefits from CO₂ injection for faster growth
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid fertiliser, particularly micronutrients
Planting & Placement
Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Ideal for foreground to midground placement where its dark, iridescent leaves can serve as a dramatic focal point in the aquascape.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Maintain moderate lighting and good water flow to minimize algae growth on leaves.
Propagation
Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to driftwood or rock and allow to establish.
Bucephalandra sp. Velvet is a luxurious and dramatic plant that brings depth, darkness, and iridescent beauty to any aquascape. Hardy, adaptable, and endlessly captivating — a must-have for serious planted tank enthusiasts and collectors.
