Appearance
Bucephalandra sp. Hades displays oval to slightly elongated leaves in an exceptionally dark, near-black to very deep green colouration, with a moody blue-purple iridescent sheen that emerges under aquarium lighting. The dark, almost brooding colouration and subtle iridescence create a dramatic, atmospheric effect that is unlike most other aquatic plants. New leaves often emerge with a deep reddish or bronze tint before maturing to their characteristic dark colouration. Against lighter substrates or brighter plants, the Hades creates a stunning dark contrast.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 5.0 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 1 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: Low to moderate — the dark colouration and iridescence are most dramatic under moderate, directional lighting
- CO₂: Not required, but benefits from CO₂ injection
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid fertiliser with micronutrients
Planting & Placement
Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Best placed as a dark accent in the foreground to midground, where its near-black leaves create a dramatic contrast with lighter plants and substrate.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Maintain moderate lighting and good water flow to minimize algae growth on leaves.
Propagation
Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to driftwood or rock and allow to establish.
Bucephalandra sp. Hades is a dark and dramatic plant that brings depth, mystery, and atmospheric beauty to any aquascape. Hardy, adaptable, and endlessly striking — a must-have for collectors and aquascapers who appreciate the darker side of planted tank design.
