Appearance
Bucephalandra Mini Black Carpet displays tiny, compact, oval to slightly elongated leaves in a very dark, near-black to deep dark green colouration with a striking blue-purple iridescent sheen. The low, spreading growth habit and dark, iridescent leaves create a dramatic, velvety carpet effect when planted in groups across the foreground of an aquarium. Under aquarium lighting, the iridescent sheen shimmers across the dark carpet, creating a breathtaking, jewel-like display.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 5.0 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 1 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: Low to moderate — the dark colouration and iridescence are most dramatic under moderate, directional lighting
- CO₂: Not required, but CO₂ injection encourages denser carpeting growth
- Fertiliser: Regular liquid fertiliser with micronutrients supports healthy carpeting growth
Planting & Placement
Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to flat rocks, mesh, or small pieces of driftwood using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Plant multiple specimens close together in the foreground to create a dense, dark carpet effect. Growth is slow but the result is spectacular.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Maintain moderate lighting and good water flow to minimize algae growth on leaves.
Propagation
Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to rock or mesh and allow to establish.
Bucephalandra Mini Black Carpet is a dramatic and extraordinary foreground plant that creates a dark, iridescent carpet unlike anything else in the planted aquarium hobby. Hardy, adaptable, and endlessly striking — a must-have for serious aquascapers.
