Here is a detailed overview of the Bucephalandra sp. "Brownie  Mini" , a popular and attractive aquarium plant.

 Origin and Description

Bucephalandra "Red Mini" is a rare, compact, and slow-growing aquatic plant native to the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia . In the wild, it typically grows along the banks of fast-flowing streams and rivers, often in partially submerged or splash water zones . It is a highly sought-after variety among aquarium enthusiasts and aquascapers for its unique coloration and petite size .

 Appearance

This plant is prized for its distinctive and attractive foliage:

  • Leaves: It features small, rounded to elongated leaves that are typically dark green to brownish-red . The leaf surface is adorned with countless tiny, bright spots, giving it a slightly shimmering appearance .

  • Coloration: Its most notable feature is the striking reddish to purplish hue of its new growth. Young leaves emerge with a vibrant red or pink color, which provides a beautiful contrast against the darker, more mature leaves . Under good conditions, the leaves can develop a deep reddish-purple tint over time .

  • Size: As the name "Mini" suggests, this plant stays very small, typically reaching a height of only 2 to 6 cm . This makes it an ideal choice for nano aquariums or for use as a foreground detail in larger setups .

 Care and Maintenance

Bucephalandra "Red Mini" is considered an easy plant to care for, making it suitable for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike . Here are its key care requirements:

Parameter Details
Lighting Low to moderate . While it tolerates low light, moderate light will bring out its best red colors .
CO₂ Not necessary . Supplemental CO₂ injection is beneficial and will promote faster growth and more vibrant coloration .
Growth Rate Very slow .
Placement Foreground to midground, attached to hardscape .
Temperature 20-28°C (68-82°F) .
Water pH 5.0 - 8.0, with an ideal range of 6.0 - 7.5 .
Propagation Rhizome division .

 Planting and Propagation

  • It is an epiphyte, which means it grows best attached to hard surfaces like driftwood, lava rock, or other aquarium decoration . It should not be planted in the substrate.

  • To attach it, you can use a cotton thread, fishing line, or a small drop of superglue gel (cyanoacrylate-based) to hold the rhizome against the hardscape until it roots itself .

  • Critical Rule: Never bury the thick, horizontal stem (the rhizome) in the substrate. Covering the rhizome will cause it to rot and the plant to die .

  • Propagation is simple: use a sharp, clean pair of scissors to cut a portion of the rhizome that has a few leaves and roots. This new piece can then be attached to another part of your hardscape .

 Important Notes

  • Stability: Bucephalandra plants are sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. Unstable conditions can cause a condition known as "melt," where the plant loses its leaves . If the rhizome remains healthy, new leaves will usually grow back .

  • Origin: In its native habitat in Borneo, Bucephalandra is becoming endangered due to illegal harvesting. It is highly recommended to purchase plants that are ethically sourced from nursery farms or grown in tissue culture to help protect wild populations .
