Plant Overview
Bucephalandra "Black Pearl" is a rare and highly sought-after epiphyte endemic to the island of Borneo. Belonging to the same family as Anubias, it shares a similarly slow-growing, rhizome-based habit but offers a distinctly exotic aesthetic — dark, iridescent foliage with a mysterious, jewel-like quality that sets it apart in any aquascape. A true collector's plant.

Appearance
"Black Pearl" lives up to its name with deep, near-black to dark green leaves that shimmer with a subtle blue-green iridescence under aquarium lighting. The leaf surface has a slightly wavy, textured margin and a lustrous sheen that catches light beautifully. Like all Bucephalandra, it may occasionally produce small white flowers even when fully submerged — a delightful surprise in a well-maintained tank. Each plant is compact and low-growing, making it perfect for detailed foreground work and hardscape decoration.
Care Guide
- Attachment: Do not bury the rhizome. Attach to driftwood or rocks using thread or aquarium-safe glue. The rhizome must remain exposed to water flow to stay healthy.
- Lighting: Thrives under low to medium light. Excessive light can cause algae on the slow-growing leaves and may wash out the dark colouration.
- CO2: Not essential, but CO2 supplementation noticeably improves growth rate and enhances the iridescent sheen on the leaves.
- Nutrients: Benefits from regular liquid fertilization with micronutrients. Soft, slightly acidic water brings out the best colouration.
- Acclimatization: Allow a few weeks for the plant to settle after introduction. Some leaf melt is normal during transition — new growth will emerge healthy and vibrant.
Aquascaping Uses
- A stunning accent plant for driftwood and rock hardscape, adding dark, jewel-toned contrast to natural layouts.
- Perfect for foreground and midground detail work in Nature Aquarium and Iwagumi-style scapes.
- Its compact size makes it ideal for nano tanks and shrimp tanks, where it also provides excellent cover for invertebrates.
- Pairs beautifully with mosses, Anubias, and fine-leaved ferns for a lush, layered epiphyte display.
