Bolivian Ram — The Hardy Jewel of South American Dwarf Cichlids

With its warm golden-tan body, rose-tinted belly, striking black markings, and flowing extended dorsal and tail fin rays, the Bolivian Ram brings understated beauty and big personality to any community aquarium.

Unlike its more demanding cousin the German Blue Ram, the Bolivian Ram is notably hardier and more forgiving of water conditions — making it an excellent choice for intermediate aquarists looking to keep their first dwarf cichlid without the stress of ultra-precise parameters.

Tank & Setup Tips

Bolivian Rams thrive in a well-planted aquarium of at least 30 gallons, with a soft sand or fine gravel substrate for their natural digging behaviour. Provide caves, flat rocks, driftwood, and dense planting to create territories and hiding spots. They appreciate open swimming areas in the mid and lower water column.

Good filtration with gentle flow and regular water changes are important, but Bolivian Rams are considerably more tolerant of temperature and pH fluctuations than other ram species — a key advantage for community setups.

Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed. Accept high-quality sinking pellets, micro pellets, crushed flakes, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily for best colour and condition.

Compatible Tank Mates

One of the most community-friendly dwarf cichlids available. Excellent tank mates include small to medium tetras (cardinal, rummy nose, black skirt), corydoras, rasboras, gouramis, and peaceful livebearers. Avoid aggressive cichlids or large boisterous fish that may intimidate them.

Breeding

Open substrate spawners — pairs will clean a flat rock or dig a shallow pit to deposit eggs. Both parents share guarding duties and are attentive to their fry, making breeding a fascinating and rewarding experience to observe.
