Appearance
Blyxa japonica forms neat, compact rosettes of narrow, slightly serrated leaves that radiate outward in a star-like pattern. Under moderate to high lighting with CO₂, the foliage takes on warm amber, golden, and reddish-bronze tones that add exceptional depth and warmth to any aquascape. Its small stature and tidy form make it ideal for creating natural-looking meadow effects in the foreground or as a textural accent in the midground.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 5.5 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 2 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: Moderate to high — essential for compact growth and warm colouration
- CO₂: Highly recommended — significantly improves growth rate and colour
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid fertiliser and a nutrient-rich substrate
Planting & Placement
Plant individual rosettes directly into a fine, nutrient-rich substrate, spacing them 3 – 5 cm apart. Blyxa japonica spreads via runners over time, gradually filling in to create a lush, natural carpet effect. Avoid disturbing the roots once established. Best suited to foreground and midground positions in aquariums of 30 litres or more.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Avoid housing with large cichlids or herbivorous fish that may uproot or graze on the plant. Pairs exceptionally well with Hemianthus callitrichoides, Eleocharis, and mosses for a layered, nature-style aquascape.
Blyxa japonica is a timeless aquascaping plant that rewards patience with stunning colour and natural elegance. A must-have for any serious planted tank enthusiast.
