Appearance
Blyxa aubertii produces long, slender, grass-like leaves that sway gently with water movement, creating a dynamic and natural look. Under moderate to high lighting with CO₂, the leaves develop attractive reddish or bronze hues along the tips and edges. Its rosette growth form gives it a fuller, bushier appearance compared to other stem plants, making it a standout midground specimen.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 5.5 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 2 – 15 dGH
- Lighting: Moderate to high — enhances colour and growth rate
- CO₂: Recommended for best growth and colouration
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular liquid fertiliser and a nutrient-rich substrate
Planting & Placement
Plant individual stems directly into a nutrient-rich substrate, spacing them 3 – 5 cm apart to allow each rosette room to develop. Blyxa aubertii grows best when rooted firmly — avoid disturbing the roots once established. Trim outer leaves periodically to encourage dense, healthy growth. Best suited to midground and background positions in aquariums of 40 litres or more.
Compatibility
Compatible with most freshwater fish and invertebrates. Safe for shrimp tanks. Avoid housing with large cichlids or herbivorous fish that may uproot or consume the plant. Pairs beautifully with carpeting plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides or Eleocharis for a layered, natural aquascape.
Blyxa aubertii is a rewarding plant for aquascapers looking to add height, movement, and warm colour to their layout. Fast-growing and visually striking — a versatile choice for intermediate planted tank enthusiasts.
