Blackwood Driftwood – Natural Aquarium Hardscape
Bring depth and natural character to your aquarium with Blackwood Driftwood. Its dark brown-to-black tones and twisted, root-like shapes create contrast against green plants, pale sand, and lighter stone. Each piece has its own contours, making it a distinctive starting point for your aquascape.
Use a single piece as a focal point, or combine several to build a forest-inspired layout. Add moss, Anubias, or Bucephalandra to soften the wood’s outline and create sheltered spaces for shrimp and small fish to explore.
Why Choose Blackwood Driftwood?
- Natural contrast: Dark tones help highlight the colours and textures of surrounding plants and hardscape.
- Individual character: Irregular contours bring a root-like, woodland feel to your layout.
- Shelter and grazing surfaces: Thoughtful placement creates shaded spaces and surfaces where biofilm can develop for shrimp and snails to graze.
- Planting versatility: A natural anchor for mosses and epiphytes, including Anubias, Java fern, and Bucephalandra.
Preparation & Care
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water and remove loose debris. Do not use soap or household cleaners.
- Pre-soak in a separate container, changing the water regularly. Some pieces take days or weeks to become waterlogged and may need to be secured safely until they sink.
- Expect some tannin release, which can tint the water amber. Pre-soaking and water changes help reduce the colour.
- Attach plants with thread or aquarium-safe plant glue, keeping rhizomes exposed.
- Position the wood securely, leaving room for swimming, water circulation, and maintenance. Check that narrow gaps cannot trap fish.
A naturally individual piece of hardscape, ready to become part of your next aquascape.
