Betta persephone is one of the most captivating and sought-after wild betta species in the hobby. Named after the Greek goddess of the underworld, this small but stunning fish hails from the dark, tannin-stained blackwater streams and peat swamps of southern Thailand — and its deep, jewel-like colouration reflects its shadowy origins perfectly. Males display a rich, iridescent blue-green and teal over a dark body, with vivid scale iridescence that seems to glow from within under the right lighting. A true gem for the wild betta enthusiast.

Small, Dark, and Breathtaking

At just 3–4 cm in length, Betta persephone is one of the smaller wild betta species — but its colouration is extraordinary. In a well-set-up blackwater aquarium with tannin-stained water, dark substrate, and warm, dim lighting, the iridescent blue-green scales of a displaying male are nothing short of spectacular. Unlike the flowing-finned domesticated betta, persephone has a sleek, natural profile that emphasises the intensity of its colour over ornamental finnage.
