Appearance & Growth

• Bulb Size: Typically varies from 0.25 to 1.5 inches (approx. 0.6–4 cm). Don't worry if it looks small; it will grow once established .

• Mature Height: Leaves usually reach 8–16 inches (20–40 cm), but in ideal conditions can exceed 32 inches (80+ cm) .

• Color: Deep ruby red to maroon under high light; turns bronze/green in low light .

• Growth Rate: Medium .

 Water Parameters (Ideal Range)

• Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F); can tolerate up to 30°C (86°F) for flowering .

• pH: 6.0 – 7.5 (acidic to neutral) .

• Hardness: Prefers soft water; may struggle in very hard water .

 Lighting & CO₂

• Light: Moderate to High. This is critical for maintaining the deep red color .

• CO₂: Not strictly required, but highly recommended. Without it, the plant grows slower and the color is duller .

 Planting the Bulb (Critical Step)

• Do NOT fully bury the bulb. Plant it half-deep (or lay it on its side) with the tip/crown exposed. Burying it completely will cause rot .

• Substrate: Nutrient-rich (clay-based) preferred. The roots are delicate and sensitive to disturbance .

 Unique Characteristics & Warnings

• Underwater Flowering: One of the few aquarium plants that can flower and set seed completely underwater .

• The "Death" Warning: If the plant flowers, cut the flower stalk immediately. Allowing it to go to seed will exhaust and kill the bulb .

• Melting: Commonly experiences "Crypt melt" when moved. Don't throw it away; leave the bulb alone and it will regrow .

• Propagation: Produces side shoots which can be cut and replanted .

• Rarity: Considered rare and "hard to find" by hobbyists .
