Appearance

Scleromystax barbatus is a large, robust catfish with a heavily armoured body and a distinctive pattern of dark bands and mottling across a pale to golden body. Males develop impressive facial bristles (“beard”) and a more intensely coloured pattern during breeding condition, making them one of the most sexually dimorphic Corydoras-related species. Their large size, bold patterning, and impressive facial bristles make them one of the most striking bottom-dwellers available.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 64 – 75°F (18 – 24°C) — prefers cooler water; avoid warm tropical temperatures
  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 2 – 15 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons for a group of 4+
  • Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel to protect their sensitive barbels
  • Decor: Caves, driftwood, and hiding spots; open foraging areas

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: Large sinking pellets, wafers, and Corydoras-specific foods
  • Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, and blanched vegetables

Feed in the evening as they are most active at dusk and night.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Best kept in groups of 4 or more. Good tank mates include medium tetras, barbs, and other cool-water community fish. Avoid very warm tropical fish that may not tolerate their preferred cooler temperatures.

The Barbatus Cory is a large, impressive, and long-lived catfish that brings bold character and natural beauty to any aquarium. A prized species for serious Corydoras and catfish enthusiasts.
