Appearance

The Madagascar Lace Plant is immediately recognizable by its extraordinary leaves — long, strap-like structures reduced entirely to a delicate lattice of veins with no leaf tissue between them, creating a translucent, lace-like window effect. The leaves can grow to impressive lengths and sway gracefully in the current, creating a mesmerizing, ethereal display. The plant grows from a bulb and produces long-stalked leaves that rise elegantly through the water column.

Water Parameters & Care

• Temperature: 64 – 77°F (18 – 25°C) — prefers cooler water; avoid warm tropical temperatures
• pH: 5.0 – 7.0 (soft, slightly acidic water preferred)
• General Hardness (GH): 1 – 8 dGH
• Lighting: Low to moderate — avoid intense lighting which can promote algae growth on the delicate leaves
• CO₂: Beneficial but not essential
• Fertiliser: Root tabs near the bulb; liquid fertiliser with micronutrients
• Rest period: The plant naturally goes dormant periodically — reduce feeding and allow the bulb to rest before new growth emerges

Planting & Placement

Plant the bulb in a nutrient-rich substrate, leaving the top half of the bulb exposed above the substrate surface. Best placed in the midground to background of large aquariums where its extraordinary lace leaves can be fully appreciated. Avoid strong currents that may damage the delicate leaf structure.

Compatibility

Compatible with peaceful fish and invertebrates. Avoid herbivorous fish that may damage the delicate lace leaves. Best kept with small, peaceful community fish. Avoid snails that may graze on the leaf tissue.

Propagation

The Madagascar Lace Plant propagates by producing daughter bulbs from the main bulb, or occasionally by seed. Separate daughter bulbs carefully and replant.
