Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 77 – 84°F (25 – 29°C)
- pH: 5.5 – 7.0 (soft, slightly acidic water preferred)
- General Hardness (GH): 1 – 8 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a pair; 30+ gallons for a harem setup
- Lighting: Low to moderate; they prefer dimmer, natural-feeling environments
- Substrate: Fine sand with leaf litter for a natural Amazonian feel
- Decor: Caves, coconut shells, driftwood, and dense planting — essential for territory and breeding
Diet & Feeding
Apistogrammas are carnivorous micro-predators. They thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet:
- Staple: High-quality dwarf cichlid pellets or micro pellets
- Treats: Frozen or live baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and micro worms
- Avoid: Dry foods exclusively — variety is key to health and colouration
Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Best kept as a pair or in a harem (one male, two or more females). Suitable tank mates include:
- Small, peaceful tetras (Ember, Cardinal, Rummy Nose)
- Corydoras catfish (bottom dwellers that won't compete for territory)
- Small rasboras
- Dwarf shrimp (with caution — may be predated upon)
Avoid housing with other dwarf cichlid species or aggressive fish. Males will defend their territory vigorously, especially when breeding.
Breeding
Apistogramma Macmasteri Gold are cave spawners. The female deposits eggs inside a cave or coconut shell and guards them fiercely, turning bright yellow as a warning signal. The male defends the broader territory. Eggs hatch in 2–3 days and fry become free-swimming within a week. Feed fry infusoria and baby brine shrimp. The female is an attentive and capable mother.
The Apistogramma Macmasteri Gold is a crown jewel of the dwarf cichlid world — intelligent, beautiful, and endlessly fascinating to observe. Whether you're a seasoned cichlid keeper or exploring dwarf cichlids for the first time, this fish will not disappoint.
