Overview & Origin

Anubias nana 'Bonsai' is a cultivated variety (cultivar) of the common Anubias barteri var. nana. It is not a naturally occurring species but was selectively bred (primarily in Asian nurseries) for its exceptionally small and compact growth habit, resembling a miniature bonsai tree—hence the name.

It belongs to the Araceae family (the arum family) and is native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa, where it grows as a rhizomatous plant attached to rocks and driftwood along streams and rivers.

Key Characteristics & Appearance

  1. Size & Form: This is its defining feature. It is one of the smallest Anubias varieties available. A full-grown plant typically stays under 5 cm (2 inches) tall and wide, making it perfect for nano tanks and foregrounds.

  2. Leaves:

    • Tiny: Leaves are only about 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches) long.

    • Shape: Heart-shaped (cordate) with a rounded base and a pointed tip, but in a very compact form.

    • Texture & Color: Thick, waxy, and dark green. This tough texture makes them highly resistant to herbivorous fish.

  3. Rhizome: Like all Anubias, it grows from a horizontal, stem-like rhizome. The 'Bonsai' rhizome is short and compact. Crucial: This rhizome must not be buried, or it will rot.

  4. Growth Rate: Extremely slow-growing. It may only produce a new leaf every few weeks. This is an advantage (low maintenance) and a disadvantage (algae can settle on old leaves if conditions aren't ideal).

Aquarium Care Requirements (Easy/ Beginner-Friendly)

Parameter Requirement Notes
Difficulty Very Easy Hardy and adaptable. Perfect for beginners.
Light Low to Moderate Thrives in low light. High light is not necessary and can promote algae growth on its slow-growing leaves.
CO2 Not Required Benefits from supplemental CO2 but grows perfectly fine without it.
Water Parameters Very Flexible Temp: 22-28°C (72-82°F)
pH: 6.0-7.5
Hardness: Soft to hard water is tolerated.
Substrate Do NOT plant in substrate. Must be attached to hardscape (wood, rock, or decoration).
Nutrients Low Demand Will benefit from a comprehensive liquid fertilizer added to the water column occasionally, but is not heavy feeder.

How to Plant/Place It (The Most Important Step)

NEVER bury the rhizome.

  1. Attach it: Use super glue gel (cyanoacrylate) or cotton thread/fishing line to secure the plant to a piece of driftwood, lava rock, or any aquarium-safe decoration.

  2. Glue Method: Apply a small dab of glue to the rhizome or rock, press together for 10-20 seconds. It's safe and bonds underwater. Let it cure for a minute if done out of water.

  3. Thread Method: Gently wrap the thread around the rhizome and hardscape until it holds; the thread will eventually decompose after roots have attached.

  4. Its roots will naturally grow and wrap around the object, securing it permanently over time.
