Elegant, robust, and wonderfully versatile — Anubias heterophylla is a large and impressive Anubias species from Central Africa, prized for its broad, variable leaves and commanding presence in the aquarium. One of the taller-growing Anubias species, it makes a stunning background or centrepiece plant in medium to large aquariums and thrives in the low-light conditions that challenge most other plants.

Appearance
Anubias heterophylla is named for its variable (“heterophyllous”) leaf shape — leaves can range from broadly oval to elongated and lance-shaped, often on the same plant. The leaves are large, thick, and deep glossy green with a leathery texture that resists damage. The robust rhizome creeps along surfaces, and the plant develops an impressive, lush presence as it matures over time.
Water Parameters & Care
- Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
- pH: 6.0 – 8.0
- General Hardness (GH): 3 – 20 dGH
- Lighting: Low to moderate — extremely shade-tolerant
- CO₂: Not required
- Fertiliser: Benefits from occasional liquid fertiliser or root tabs
Planting & Placement
Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Once established, roots will grip the surface naturally. Best placed in the midground to background of medium to large aquariums where its impressive size can be fully appreciated.
Compatibility
Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Thick leaves resist most herbivorous fish. Algae can develop on older leaves — Otocinclus, Amano shrimp, and Nerite snails make excellent companions for algae control.
Propagation
Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to driftwood or rock and allow to establish. New leaves emerge slowly from the growing tip.
Anubias heterophylla is a magnificent, low-maintenance plant that brings lush, tropical beauty to any aquarium. Hardy, adaptable, and virtually indestructible — a perfect choice for aquarists who want impressive results with minimal effort.
