Bold, architectural, and impressively large — Anubias hastifolia is one of the biggest and most striking Anubias species available in the aquarium hobby. With its tall, arrow-shaped leaves and robust rhizome, this West African aquatic plant makes a dramatic statement as a background or centrepiece plant in large aquariums. Like all Anubias, it is virtually indestructible and thrives in low-light conditions, making it an excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels.

Appearance

Anubias hastifolia is distinguished by its large, elongated, arrow-shaped (hastate) leaves that can reach impressive sizes in a mature aquarium. The leaves are a deep, glossy green with a thick, leathery texture that resists damage from herbivorous fish. The robust rhizome creeps along surfaces, anchoring the plant to driftwood or rocks. Its tall, upright growth habit makes it one of the most imposing Anubias species available.

Water Parameters & Care

  • Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
  • pH: 6.0 – 8.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 3 – 20 dGH
  • Lighting: Low to moderate — one of the most shade-tolerant aquarium plants available
  • CO₂: Not required; grows well without CO₂ injection
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from occasional liquid fertiliser or root tabs near the rhizome

Planting & Placement

Like all Anubias, A. hastifolia must never be planted with the rhizome buried in substrate — this will cause the rhizome to rot. Instead, attach it to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Once established, the roots will grip the surface naturally. It is best placed in the midground to background of large aquariums where its impressive height can be fully appreciated.

Compatibility

Anubias hastifolia is compatible with virtually all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Its thick, tough leaves are resistant to most herbivorous fish. It grows slowly, which means algae can sometimes develop on older leaves — Otocinclus catfish, Amano shrimp, and Nerite snails are excellent algae-control companions.

Propagation

Propagate by dividing the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach the new sections to driftwood or rock and allow them to establish. New leaves will emerge slowly but steadily from the growing tip.

Anubias hastifolia is a majestic, low-maintenance plant that brings a bold, jungle-like presence to any large aquarium. Hardy, adaptable, and virtually indestructible — a true cornerstone plant for the serious aquascaper.
