Tall, graceful, and wonderfully architectural — Anubias congensis is a striking mid-to-large Anubias species from the Congo River basin, prized for its elongated, lance-shaped leaves and upright growth habit. One of the more elegant Anubias species, it makes a beautiful background or midground plant in medium to large aquariums and thrives in the low-light conditions that challenge most other plants.

Appearance

Anubias congensis is distinguished by its elongated, lance-shaped to narrowly oval leaves that grow upright on long petioles, giving the plant a tall, graceful silhouette. The leaves are a rich, deep green with a smooth, glossy surface and prominent veining. The robust rhizome creeps along surfaces, and the plant develops an impressive, lush presence as it matures. Its upright, architectural growth habit makes it an excellent contrast plant alongside broader-leaved Anubias species.

Water Parameters & Care

  • Temperature: 72 – 82°F (22 – 28°C)
  • pH: 6.0 – 8.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 3 – 20 dGH
  • Lighting: Low to moderate — extremely shade-tolerant
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from occasional liquid fertiliser or root tabs

Planting & Placement

Never bury the rhizome in substrate — attach to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Its tall, upright growth makes it ideal for midground to background placement in medium to large aquariums, where it creates a natural, jungle-like backdrop.

Compatibility

Compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates. Thick leaves resist most herbivorous fish. Algae can develop on older leaves — Otocinclus, Amano shrimp, and Nerite snails are excellent companions for algae control.

Propagation

Divide the rhizome with a clean, sharp blade, ensuring each section has at least 2–3 leaves. Attach new sections to driftwood or rock and allow to establish. New leaves emerge slowly from the growing tip.

Anubias congensis is a graceful and low-maintenance plant that brings height, elegance, and a natural jungle feel to any aquarium. Hardy, adaptable, and virtually indestructible — a perfect choice for aquarists who want impressive results with minimal effort.
