Alternanthera reineckii 'Rosanervig' is a stunning and popular aquatic stem plant, highly prized in the aquascaping hobby for its unique and vibrant coloration. Its name, "Rosanervig," hints at its most distinctive feature—pink veins that contrast beautifully against its reddish leaves .

Here are the key details about this plant, covering its appearance, care requirements, and how to use it in an aquarium.

 Plant Appearance & Origin

  • Scientific NameAlternanthera reineckii 'Rosanervig' (also known as Alternanthera reineckii 'Red Ruby') .

  • Family: Amaranthaceae .

  • Origin: It is a cultivated variety (cultivar) originating from South America and does not exist in the wild .

  • Key Feature: Its most striking characteristic is the light pink to white veins that run through its leaves, which can be pink, red, or even magenta, depending on the conditions . This veining gives it a unique, almost "painted" look.

  • Growth Habit: Compared to other Alternanthera varieties, it has a more compact growth form and does not grow as tall or robustly . It typically reaches a height of 10-40 cm and a width of 5-10 cm .

 Aquarium Care & Parameters

This plant is considered to have a medium difficulty level, making it suitable for hobbyists with some experience who are willing to provide for its needs .

Parameter Recommended Range Notes
Lighting Medium to High  Essential for vibrant color and compact growth. Insufficient light will cause colors to fade and the plant to become "leggy" .
Temperature 22-28°C (72-82°F)  Can tolerate a wider range of 4-30°C, but best growth occurs in this range .
pH 5.0 - 7.5  Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water.
CO2 Highly Recommended (20-30 mg/l)  While it can survive without it, CO2 supplementation is crucial for achieving dense growth and intense, vivid colors .
Substrate Nutrient-rich (e.g., aquasoil)  It is a notable root feeder, so an enriched substrate or root tabs are very beneficial.
Fertilization Regular dosing of macros (NPK) and micros, especially iron  Consistent nutrients are key to preventing the leaves from looking pale or washed out .

 Aquascaping & Placement

  • Placement: Its compact nature makes it incredibly versatile. It is most commonly used in the midground but can also be placed in the background of smaller tanks or even the foreground if trimmed regularly .

  • Aquascaping Use: It serves as a fantastic color accent . Its bright pink and red tones create a stunning visual contrast when planted in groups alongside green plants (like Rotala or Anubias), grey rock, or driftwood .

  • Planting Tips: Plant stems in small groups using tweezers, leaving about 5-8 cm of space between them. This allows light to reach the lower leaves and gives the plant room to develop side shoots for a bushier appearance .

 Propagation & Maintenance

  • Propagation: It is very easy to propagate. Simply take top cuttings (6-10 cm long) and replant them into the substrate. The original stem will also grow new side shoots, becoming bushier .

  • Maintenance: Regular trimming (every 1-3 weeks in high-tech tanks) is required to maintain its desired height and shape and to encourage bushy growth . You can trim it like a hedge to create a uniform, dense block .

 Common Challenges

  • Pale or Orange Color: If your plant looks more orange or washed-out than vibrant pink, it's a sign you need to increase lighting or iron levels .

  • Leggy Growth (long spaces between leaves): This is a classic sign of insufficient light or CO2. Increasing both will promote more compact growth .

  • Melting After Planting: It's normal for the plant to "melt" or lose some leaves shortly after being introduced to a new aquarium. Be patient and leave the healthy roots in the substrate; new, submerged growth will follow if conditions are stable .
