Playful, active, and endlessly entertaining — the Yoyo Loach (Botia almorhae, formerly Botia lohachata) is one of the most popular and characterful loaches in the freshwater hobby. Named for the "Y-O-Y-O" pattern visible along its sides, this social bottom-dweller is a fantastic addition to community aquariums and an excellent natural snail controller.

Their torpedo-shaped body, subtly forked tail, and four pairs of barbels around the mouth give them a distinctive and attractive appearance.
Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 75 – 82°F (24 – 28°C)
- pH: 6.5 – 7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 3 – 12 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a group of 4+
- Lighting: Low to moderate; they prefer dimmer areas
- Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel to protect their sensitive barbels
- Decor: Caves, driftwood, and hiding spots; they love to squeeze into tight spaces and rest together in groups
Diet & Feeding
Yoyo Loaches are omnivorous bottom feeders with a particular fondness for snails:
- Staple: Sinking pellets, wafers, and loach-specific foods
- Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and blanched vegetables
- Bonus: Excellent natural snail controllers — they will hunt and eat pest snails like Ramshorns and Malaysian Trumpet Snails
Feed in the evening as they are most active at night.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Social and peaceful with most community fish. Best kept in groups of 4 or more. Great tank mates include:
- Tetras, rasboras, and barbs
- Corydoras catfish
- Gouramis and livebearers
- Larger peaceful cichlids
Avoid housing with very small nano fish or delicate shrimp, as Yoyo Loaches may harass or eat them.
Breeding
Yoyo Loaches are rarely bred in home aquariums and are typically wild-caught or commercially bred in large facilities. Breeding requires specific hormonal triggers and is not commonly achieved by hobbyists.
The Yoyo Loach is a fun, functional, and fascinating fish — a natural snail buster with bags of personality. Add a group to your community tank and enjoy their playful antics and social behaviour every day.
