Appearance

The Vanmanenia hillstream loach has a beautifully flattened, streamlined body with a broad, sucker-like underside adapted for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing water. The body is patterned with intricate brown, cream, and black mottling that provides excellent camouflage against a rocky riverbed. Their paired pectoral and pelvic fins are spread wide and flat, giving them an almost ray-like silhouette that is both functional and visually striking.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 65 – 75°F (18 – 24°C) — a cool-water species; avoid warm tropical temperatures
  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 4 – 15 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons
  • Flow: Strong water flow and high oxygenation are essential — use a powerhead or strong filter return
  • Substrate: Smooth river rocks, flat stones, and fine gravel
  • Decor: Flat rocks and smooth surfaces for grazing; avoid sharp decorations

Diet & Feeding

  • Primary diet: Algae and biofilm growing on rocks and glass
  • Supplemental feeding: Algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and sinking pellets
  • Calcium supplement: Cuttlebone helps maintain health in softer water

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Peaceful with most fish but can be territorial with other hillstream loaches — provide ample space and visual barriers if keeping multiple individuals. Good tank mates include White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Danios, cool-water barbs, and other hillstream species with similar requirements.

The Vanmanenia pingchowensis is a rare and fascinating hillstream loach that rewards dedicated aquarists with its unique appearance and natural behaviour. A true collector's species for the cool-water and hillstream aquarium enthusiast.
