Appearance

The Fahaka Puffer has a large, robust body with a distinctive pattern of horizontal stripes or bands running along the sides — the feature that gives it its alternative name, the Band Puffer. The dorsal surface is olive-brown to tan, while the ventral surface is pale yellow to white. The large, expressive eyes and powerful beak give this fish a commanding, almost prehistoric appearance. Juveniles display more vivid colouration that may fade slightly as the fish matures.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 75 – 82°F (24 – 28°C)
  • pH: 7.0 – 8.0
  • General Hardness (GH): 10 – 20 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 125 gallons for a single adult
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
  • Decor: Caves, driftwood, and hiding spots; open swimming space essential
  • Filtration: Powerful filtration required — Fahaka Puffers are messy eaters

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: Snails, mussels, clams, and other hard-shelled invertebrates — essential for beak wear
  • Treats: Frozen shrimp, crayfish, earthworms, and other meaty foods
  • Note: Hard foods are essential to prevent beak overgrowth

Feed every 2–3 days — do not overfeed.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Must be kept alone. The Fahaka Puffer is extremely aggressive and will attack and kill any tank mate, regardless of size. A dedicated species-only tank is absolutely required.

Behaviour & Intelligence

Fahaka Puffers are highly intelligent and interactive fish that quickly learn to recognize their owners and will beg for food at the glass. They are curious, bold, and full of personality — many owners describe them as having dog-like intelligence and behaviour.

The Fahaka Puffer is a magnificent and intelligent fish that rewards dedicated aquarists with a truly unique and interactive experience. A true centrepiece species for the serious pufferfish enthusiast.
