Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 60 – 72°F (15 – 22°C) — a cool-water species; avoid warm tropical temperatures
- pH: 7.0 – 8.0
- General Hardness (GH): 8 – 20 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a school of 6+
- Lighting: Moderate to bright — their iridescent colours shine under good lighting
- Flow: Moderate to strong — they come from clear, well-oxygenated streams
- Substrate: Natural gravel or sand; smooth river stones add a natural feel
- Plants & Decor: Hardy cold-water plants or minimal decor with open swimming space
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: High-quality flake food or small pellets
- Treats: Frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and small insects
Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Suitable cool-water tank mates include:
- Other native North American fish (darters, other shiners)
- White Cloud Mountain Minnows
- Hillstream loaches
- Dojo loaches
Avoid tropical fish that require warmer temperatures, as Rainbow Shiners thrive in cooler conditions.
Breeding
Rainbow Shiners are egg scatterers that spawn over gravel in flowing water. Males display their most intense colours during spawning season. A separate breeding tank with a gravel substrate and good flow can encourage spawning. Eggs hatch in 4–7 days and fry can be fed infusoria and baby brine shrimp.
The Rainbow Shiner is a truly extraordinary fish — a native North American species that rivals the most colourful tropical fish in the world. Our select-grade males represent the very best of this spectacular species. A must-have for cool-water aquarium enthusiasts.
