This plant is a fantastic choice for aquascapers due to its unique, flowing leaves that add movement and texture to the aquarium . Its scientific name is often a topic of discussion, and it is also known as Pogostemon quadrifolius or Pogostemon stellatus 'Octopus' . Native to Southeast Asia, including Laos, it belongs to the Lamiaceae family .
The following table summarizes the key characteristics and care requirements for this plant.
Appearance and Key Features
The plant's name comes from its most distinctive feature: the long, wispy, bright green leaves that undulate in the water current, resembling the tentacles of an octopus . These narrow leaves grow in whorls around a sturdy stem and can reach lengths of 12-14 cm or more . Under very high light, the tips of the plant may develop reddish or reddish-brown hues . In its emersed form (grown out of water), the plant looks different, producing serrated leaves and small purple flowers .
Care and Tank Requirements
One of the reasons for this plant's popularity is its adaptability. It is considered suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists .
-
Tank Size: Due to its potential height, it is best suited for aquariums of at least 10 gallons or larger .
-
Water Parameters: It is very flexible and thrives in the typical conditions of a tropical community tank, with a temperature around 70-82°F (21-28°C) and a pH of 6.0-7.5 .
-
Lighting: While it can survive in lower light, it grows best and looks fullest under moderate to high lighting . Insufficient light can cause the stems to become "leggy" with sparse leaves .
-
Substrate and Fertilization: A nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial for strong root growth . Supplementing with a liquid fertilizer will support its fast growth rate and keep it healthy . If you have a bare substrate like sand, root tabs can provide necessary nutrients .
Growth and Maintenance
-
Growth Rate: This is a fast-growing plant, especially under good light and with added nutrients .
-
Pruning: Regular trimming is the key to maintaining a bushy, attractive shape . When you cut the top of a stem, it will split into two new shoots, making the plant denser .
-
Propagation: It is very easy to propagate. Simply take a healthy cutting from any part of the stem and replant it into the substrate. It will quickly develop roots and grow into a new plant .
Benefits in the Aquarium
-
Aesthetic Appeal: It adds a unique texture, depth, and sense of movement to the aquascape, creating a dynamic underwater scene .
-
Natural Filter: Like many fast-growing stem plants, it is excellent at absorbing excess nutrients (like nitrates) and waste from the water column, which helps in the fight against algae .
-
Habitat: Its dense growth provides excellent cover and grazing areas for smaller fish and shrimp .
