The Panda Cory has a pale white to cream body adorned with three bold black markings — a black eye mask, a black dorsal fin patch, and a black caudal peduncle spot — that together create the unmistakable panda pattern. Their armoured body, whiskered snout, and waddling swimming style give them an irresistible, endearing character that makes them a favourite in any aquarium.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 68 – 77°F (20 – 25°C) — prefers cooler water than many tropical fish
  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 2 – 12 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a group of 6+
  • Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel to protect their sensitive barbels
  • Decor: Caves, driftwood, and hiding spots; dense planting appreciated

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: Sinking pellets, wafers, and Corydoras-specific foods
  • Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and blanched vegetables

Feed in the evening as they are most active at dusk and night.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Excellent tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, gouramis, and dwarf shrimp (generally safe with adults). Avoid aggressive fish or large cichlids.

Breeding

Panda Corys breed readily in captivity. A water change with slightly cooler water often triggers spawning. Females carry fertilized eggs in their pelvic fins and deposit them on plant leaves or glass. Eggs hatch in 3–5 days and fry can be fed infusoria and baby brine shrimp.

The Panda Cory is a timeless classic — adorable, peaceful, and endlessly entertaining. Keep them in a group and enjoy their lively, social behaviour every day.
