Spectacular, multi-coloured, and utterly unique — the O.B. Peacock Cichlid is one of the most visually extraordinary African cichlids available. “O.B.” stands for “Orange Blotch” — a genetic colour pattern that produces a stunning mosaic of orange, black, and white blotches across the body, creating a fish that looks like a living work of abstract art. No two O.B. Peacocks are identical, making every fish a unique specimen.

Appearance

The O.B. Peacock displays a stunning mosaic of orange, black, and white blotches across the body — the Orange Blotch pattern that makes every individual fish unique. The blotches vary in size, shape, and distribution, creating a naturally varied, abstract pattern that is unlike any other cichlid colour form. The O.B. gene can be expressed in both males and females, making this one of the few cichlid colour forms where females can be as colourful as males.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 76 – 82°F (24 – 28°C)
  • pH: 7.8 – 8.5 (alkaline water essential)
  • General Hardness (GH): 10 – 20 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons
  • Substrate: Sand; rocks and caves for territory and hiding
  • Decor: Rock formations with caves; open sandy areas for foraging

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: High-quality cichlid pellets and flake food
  • Treats: Frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and krill
  • Note: Avoid high-protein meaty foods — prone to Malawi Bloat

Feed 2–3 times daily.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Best kept in a Lake Malawi community with other Peacock and Haplochromine cichlids. Avoid aggressive Mbuna species. Keep one male per species to prevent hybridization.

Breeding

Maternal mouthbrooders. Females incubate eggs in their mouths for 3–4 weeks. Fry are released as fully formed juveniles.

The O.B. Peacock Cichlid is a spectacular and unique fish — every individual a one-of-a-kind work of natural art. A stunning showpiece for any Lake Malawi aquarium.
