It's important to note that this plant has been reclassified by botanists, and you will often see it sold under its updated scientific name, Ammannia pedicellata 'Golden' .
For a quick summary, here are its key characteristics:
Origin and Appearance
Golden Nesaea is not found in the wild. It is a selected cultivar or mutation of the species Nesaea pedicellata (now Ammannia pedicellata), which is native to the swamps and bogs of Africa . The "Golden" variety was stabilized and introduced to the aquarium trade by nurseries in Florida around 2009 .
Its most striking feature is its bright, golden-yellow to lime-green leaves, which provide a stunning contrast against more common green or red plants in an aquascape . The stems are a contrasting pink to dark red, and the narrow leaves can grow up to 5 cm long, arranged oppositely on the stem . It can grow to a height of over 30-40 cm .
Care and Maintenance
While not a plant for complete beginners, Golden Nesaea can thrive with its specific needs met. The key to success is strong lighting. Insufficient light will cause the lower leaves to turn black and drop off, and the plant will lose its vibrant color .
-
Lighting: High light (around 0.8 watts/liter or more) is essential for maintaining compact growth and the intense golden color .
-
CO₂ and Nutrients: While it can survive in low-tech setups, CO₂ injection is highly recommended . With CO₂, the plant grows more compact, vibrant, and faster . A nutrient-rich substrate and regular dosing of liquid fertilizers, especially iron, are also beneficial .
-
Water Parameters: It is adaptable to a range of conditions but prefers soft to moderately hard water . A stable temperature between 22-28°C is ideal .
-
A Note on Potassium: Some hobbyists report that this plant can be sensitive to excessive potassium in the water column, which may cause damage .
Planting and Propagation
-
Propagation: Like most stem plants, it is very easy to propagate. Simply take a cutting from the top or a side shoot and replant it into the substrate . Some hobbyists prefer this method, as the original base of an old stem can become weak and thin after multiple trimmings .
-
Placement: It is best used as a group in the mid-ground to background of the aquarium to create a dense, bushy thicket of gold . When planting, leave a little space between stems to ensure light reaches the lower leaves, preventing them from dying off .
Tips for Success
-
Prevent Shading: Do not let taller plants shade the Golden Nesaea, as it will quickly drop its lower leaves .
-
Trim Regularly: Frequent trimming will encourage the plant to bush out and prevent it from becoming "leggy" .
-
Watch for Deficiencies: Keep an eye out for leaf curling or blackening, which are signs of poor water conditions or nutrient deficiencies (such as calcium) .
