Appearance
The Burundi Frontosa displays a bold, striking pattern of alternating black and white vertical bands across the body — typically 6 bands in the Burundi form — with a distinctive large nuchal hump on the forehead that develops as the fish matures, most prominent in dominant males. The blue iridescent sheen on the white areas of the body adds a beautiful, subtle colour accent to the bold black-and-white pattern. The Burundi locality form is particularly prized for its bold, well-defined banding and the quality of its nuchal hump development.
Water Parameters & Tank Setup
- Temperature: 75 – 81°F (24 – 27°C)
- pH: 7.8 – 9.0 (hard, alkaline water essential)
- General Hardness (GH): 10 – 20 dGH
- Tank Size: Minimum 125 gallons for a small group; 200+ gallons for a colony
- Substrate: Sand; large rock formations and caves
- Decor: Large caves and hiding spots; open swimming space; dim lighting preferred
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: High-quality large cichlid pellets
- Treats: Frozen shrimp, krill, mussels, and other meaty foods
- Note: Slow, deliberate feeders — ensure they are not outcompeted for food by faster tank mates
Feed every 2–3 days — Frontosas have slow metabolisms and should not be overfed.
Compatibility & Tank Mates
Best kept in a species-only colony or with other large, peaceful Lake Tanganyika cichlids. Avoid fast, boisterous fish that may outcompete them for food. Frontosas are predatory toward small fish — avoid keeping with small species.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooders. Females incubate eggs in their mouths for 4–6 weeks — one of the longest mouthbrooding periods of any cichlid. Fry are released as large, fully formed juveniles.
The Frontosa Cichlid (Burundi) is a majestic and iconic fish that brings regal presence, bold patterning, and extraordinary longevity to any large African cichlid aquarium. A true once-in-a-lifetime fish for the dedicated enthusiast.
