A true showpiece for the species tank or biotope aquarium.

Appearance

Males are spectacular — displaying a rich purple to blue-violet body covered in vivid red-orange spots and flecks, with a large, ornate sailfin dorsal that they raise dramatically during displays. Their finnage is colourful and elaborate, making them one of the most visually impressive gudgeons available. Females are more subdued but still attractively patterned. When displaying to rivals or potential mates, males are truly breathtaking.

Water Parameters & Tank Setup

  • Temperature: 68 – 79°F (20 – 26°C)
  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5
  • General Hardness (GH): 4 – 15 dGH
  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a pair; larger for a community
  • Lighting: Moderate — enhances their iridescent purple colouration
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel
  • Decor: Caves, flat rocks, driftwood, and dense planting for territory and hiding spots

Diet & Feeding

Purple Sailfin Gudgeons are carnivorous predators:

  • Staple: High-quality sinking pellets or carnivore cichlid pellets
  • Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, and earthworms
  • Avoid: Small fish and shrimp that may be eaten

Feed once or twice daily.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Best kept as a pair or in a species tank. Suitable tank mates include similarly sized, robust fish that can hold their own. Avoid small nano fish, shrimp, or timid species. Males are territorial with each other — provide ample space and visual barriers.

Breeding

Purple Sailfin Gudgeons are cave spawners. Males guard the eggs and fan them until they hatch. Provide flat rocks or caves as spawning sites. Fry can be fed baby brine shrimp and micro worms once free-swimming.

The Purple Sailfin Gudgeon is a rare and magnificent fish — bold in colour, dramatic in display, and endlessly fascinating to observe. A true collector's species for the dedicated aquarist.
