Bucephalandra 'Dark Velvet' is a slow-growing, epiphytic aquatic plant from Borneo, prized for its beautiful, dark-colored leaves and relatively easy care requirements .

 Botanical & Common Names

  • Scientific Name: Bucephalandra sp. 'Dark Velvet'

  • Family: Araceae

  • Synonyms: This plant is also known as Bucephalandra sp. 'Black Velvet' . It is considered to be the same species as Bucephalandra sp. 'Black Gaia' .

 Origin and Habitat

This plant is native to the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia . Specifically, it has been collected from the West Kalimantan region in Indonesia's tropical rainforests . In the wild, it grows as a rheophyte along the banks of fast-flowing streams and rivers, often attached to rocks or tree roots, and can be found in submerged, emersed, or seasonally flooded conditions .

 Physical Description

  • Leaf Shape: It is characterized by its elongated, narrow leaves which can be slightly wavy or curled along the edges . The leaf shape is described as lance-shaped (lanceolate) to narrow and rounded (narrowly orbicular) .

  • Coloration: The plant's name comes from its stunning color. The mature leaves can range from a deep, dark green to a velvety blue, black, or purplish hue, especially under good growing conditions . New leaf growth often emerges in shades of yellow-green, orange, or reddish-brown, providing a beautiful contrast .

  • Size: It is a relatively small plant. The leaves are typically small, with individual leaf blades reaching only 1-4 cm in length . The plant itself generally grows to a height of about 5-10 cm, making it an excellent choice for the foreground or midground of an aquarium .

  • Rhizome: Like all Bucephalandra, it grows from a creeping rhizome. This rhizome is often green or reddish and is where the leaves and roots emerge .

  • Iridescence: A distinctive feature of many Bucephalandra, including 'Dark Velvet', is the presence of tiny, shiny spots on the leaves called "pearl spots." These can give the leaves a subtle, iridescent, or glittery appearance, which becomes more visible under water .

 Aquarium Care and Parameters

Bucephalandra 'Dark Velvet' is considered an easy plant to care for, making it suitable for beginners .

  • Temperature: It thrives in tropical temperatures between 22-28°C .

  • pH: It prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, with an ideal pH range of 5.5 to 7.5 .

  • Lighting: The plant is adaptable to various lighting conditions, from low to high . However, very intense light is not always necessary and can sometimes cause issues . Moderate light is often recommended to achieve the best coloration and growth while minimizing the risk of algae .

  • CO₂: CO₂ injection is not required for this plant to grow and stay healthy . However, supplementing with CO₂ will significantly increase its growth rate and can lead to more vibrant leaf colors .

  • Water Hardness: It grows best in soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (dGH) of around 2-12 .

  • Growth Rate: Its growth rate is very slow . This means it requires very little maintenance and trimming but also means aquarists must be patient.

 Planting and Propagation

  • As an Epiphyte: Like Anubias or Java Fern, Bucephalandra is an epiphyte . This means it should not be planted in the substrate.

    • How to attach: The rhizome must be attached to hardscape materials like driftwood, rocks, or lava stone . It can be secured with super glue gel, fishing line, or cotton thread until its roots naturally attach .

    • Rhizome warning: Burying the rhizome in the gravel or soil will cause it to rot and the plant will die .

  • Propagation: The plant is very easy to propagate. Simply take a sharp, clean pair of scissors and cut the long rhizome into sections, ensuring each section has a few leaves and roots. These new sections can then be attached to hardscape elsewhere in the tank .

 Key Tips for Success

  • Stability is Key: Bucephalandra plants are sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. Drastic fluctuations can cause the plant to "melt," where it sheds its leaves . As long as the rhizome remains healthy, the plant will usually grow back new leaves once conditions stabilize .

  • Algae: Due to their slow growth, old leaves can be prone to algae. Planting them in shadier areas of the tank and ensuring good water circulation can help prevent this .

  • Patience: Don't be alarmed if the plant loses some leaves shortly after being introduced to a new aquarium. It is simply acclimating to the new water conditions. New, adapted leaves will grow in time .

In summary, Bucephalandra sp. 'Dark Velvet' is a stunning and resilient plant that adds a touch of deep, exotic color to any aquascape. Its small size, dark velvety leaves, and undemanding nature make it a fantastic choice for aquarists of all skill levels.
